Numbers 17:1-13 KJV
And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

[2] Speak unto the children of Israel, and take of every one of them a rod according to the house of their fathers, of all their princes according to the house of their fathers twelve rods: write thou every man's name upon his rod.

[3] And thou shalt write Aaron's name upon the rod of Levi: for one rod shall be for the head of the house of their fathers.

[4] And thou shalt lay them up in the tabernacle of the congregation before the testimony, where I will meet with you.

[5] And it shall come to pass, that the man's rod, whom I shall choose, shall blossom: and I will make to cease from me the murmurings of the children of Israel, whereby they murmur against you.

[6] And Moses spake unto the children of Israel, and every one of their princes gave him a rod apiece, for each prince one, according to their fathers' houses, even twelve rods: and the rod of Aaron was among their rods.

[7] And Moses laid up the rods before the Lord in the tabernacle of witness.

[8] And it came to pass, that on the morrow Moses went into the tabernacle of witness; and, behold, the rod of Aaron for the house of Levi was budded, and brought forth buds, and bloomed blossoms, and yielded almonds.

[9] And Moses brought out all the rods from before the Lord unto all the children of Israel: and they looked, and took every man his rod.

[10] And the Lord said unto Moses, Bring Aaron's rod again before the testimony, to be kept for a token against the rebels; and thou shalt quite take away their murmurings from me, that they die not.

[11] And Moses did so : as the Lord commanded him, so did he.

[12] And the children of Israel spake unto Moses, saying, Behold, we die, we perish, we all perish.

[13] Whosoever cometh any thing near unto the tabernacle of the Lord shall die: shall we be consumed with dying?

Trump Taps Butch Bowers As Impeachment Defense Attorney
Former President Donald Trump told associates he has picked Butch Bowers, a South Carolina attorney, to represent him in his Senate impeachment trial, according to a person familiar with the matter.

The move was finalized on Wednesday, Mr. Trump's last day in office, the person said. Several of the lawyers who represented Mr. Trump in his first impeachment trial—including former White House counsel Pat Cipollone and Jay Sekulow—had told associates they didn't plan to defend Mr. Trump a second time, according to people familiar with the matter.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell told Republicans Thursday he would propose starting Mr. Trump’s impeachment trial in two weeks to give his legal team time to prepare, GOP aides said Thursday.

The House voted last week to impeach Mr. Trump, alleging he incited a mob that stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 as part of his effort to overturn his election loss. It's not yet clear when the Senate trial will begin.

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — Attorney General Gordon MacDonald was confirmed Friday as chief justice of the New Hampshire Supreme Court, 18 months after he was initially rejected for the position.

Republicans won a 4-1 majority on the Executive Council in November, ousting Democrats who had blocked MacDonald’s confirmation in July 2019. He will replace Chief Justice Robert Lynn, who retired in August that year.

While MacDonald had broad support from the legal community — including from Lynn and his two predecessors — opponents questioned his lack of experience as a judge and his involvement in conservative Republican politics.

MacDonald is Republican Gov. Chris Sununu’s third appointee to the high court without experience as a judge, and the first in at least a century to become chief justice without prior time on the bench.

During a public hearing Thursday, MacDonald said his experience, knowledge and skills have prepared him for the key duties of the job: serving as an appellate judge, acting as administrator of the entire court system and being a leader in the legal profession.

And he promised to leave his personal views at the door, scrupulously follow the law, and deliver fair, impartial decisions in a timely manner.

Councilor Joe Kenney said that neither MacDonald nor the state’s justice system is perfect, but that he was confident MacDonald would be an exceptional judge, problem solver and manager.

“I think it’s time we move on with one of our citizens here in New Hampshire, one who has exemplified true character, a legal mind and a willingness to work with people and help serve the people of the New Hampshire the best way he knows how,” he said.

Cinde Warmington, the lone Democrat on the council, insisted her vote was not political but said she had substantial concerns about his commitment to protecting fundamental rights related to health care and voting.

“I strongly believe we need a judiciary prepared to face the challenges of the day: racial injustice, political division, gender inequality. These are issues that will best be addressed by a judiciary that does not bind itself to rigid, robotic computation but one that is true to both the words of our constitution and the complexities of factual consideration in a changing world,” she said. “While I respect him, his legal scholarship and his integrity, I think a court led by Gordon MacDonald will exacerbate rather than heal the wounds of division and injustice in our state.”

In a news release titled “Justice Prevails,” Sununu called MacDonald “one of the most highly qualified individuals ever to serve as chief justice.” MacDonald will be sworn in at a later date.

California Attorney General Launches Civil Rights Probe Of L.A. County Sheriff's Department

(Rich Pedroncelli / Associated Press)
California Atty. Gen. Xavier Becerra on Friday announced that he is launching a civil rights investigation into the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, an agency beset by allegations of deputy misconduct, controversial shootings and resistance to oversight from Sheriff Alex Villanueva.

Becerra's office will look at whether the department, the largest sheriff's department in the country, has engaged in a pattern of unconstitutional policing.

“There are serious concerns and reports that accountability and adherence to legitimate policing practices have lapsed at the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department," Becerra said in a statement. "We are undertaking this investigation to determine if LASD has violated the law or the rights of the people of Los Angeles County.”

The announcement comes after a series of high-profile shootings and allegations of misconduct within the LASD that have triggered widespread protests and demands from community organizers and lawmakers for independent investigations.

In September, a congressional subcommittee requested that the U.S. Department of Justice investigate allegations of systemic abuses by “criminal gangs” of LASD deputies that use aggressive tactics and prize violence. . Records show that the county has paid out roughly $55 million in lawsuits and legal claims in which sheriff’s deputies have been accused of belonging to a secret clique. .

Los Angeles County has become a flashpoint in the national debate over how to reform and monitor law enforcement that took on urgency following the police killing last year of George Floyd and other abuses of Black men and women. Sheriff Alex Villanueva has clashed with the Board of Supervisors since taking office in December 2018, as the board has challenged the sheriff's decisions to rehire deputies with histories of misconduct. More recently, Villanueva and the board have tangled over county's response to the COVID-19 pandemic and budget cuts.

And the Sheriff Civilian Oversight Commission, a watchdog group appointed by the supervisors, took the unprecedented step of calling for his resignation last fall, saying he’s dragged his feet on critical reforms, resisted oversight of the department and failed to hold deputies accountable.

In a sign of the growing distrust between county leaders and the sheriff, the Board of Supervisors last year gave the commission authority to subpoena the LASD for internal records and testimony. A few months later, voters affirmed the move and Gov. Gavin Newsom followed by signing a state law that gives subpoena power to police oversight panels statewide.

When Villanueva defied a subpoena to testify about his handling of the coronavirus pandemic in the jails, the county took him to court, testing the new check on his power.

Villanueva challenged the legality of the subpoena, describing it at a news conference as a “public shaming endeavor.” A judge ruled that the commission was well within its authority, however lawyers representing L.A. County dropped the case after the sheriff showed up voluntarily to the panel's December meeting and agreed to appear again this week.

While civilian oversight efforts have provided an outside check on policing, they have faced criticism for not having enough power to force real changes in California, where police are granted significant privacy rights and other protections.

Dine To Donate: Small Business Helps Family In Need After Fire
MT. VERNON (WSIL) -- The community is pulling together to support a family who lost everything to a house fire.

Mt. Vernon residents Payton and Annie Schoenbeck, and their children are all safe and sound after a fire destroyed their home.

The Schoenbeck's neighbor and Pastor, Jon Henninger, says it didn't take long for the community to extend a hand.

"So we were in here the day after the fire, I was in here with our little girls, and my little girl started telling Jen, who owns the restaurant, started telling Jen the story of the fire. Jen immediately said we have to do a dine to donate."

Jennifer Carmona, owner of Guero's Mexican Restaurant, says she knew exactly how to help.

"And he asked me if I had heard about Payton, and I had not, and we hadn't done a dine to donate in a long time, People have been on pause all of last year, so we were happy to do it, set it right up."

Dine to Donate sends 20% of all proceeds directly to the family.

"Mt. Vernon is a really great community and then of course Central Christian Church that Payton and Annie are also a part of is a super tight knit family," says Henninger.

"I got my hair done at the salon this morning and the lady sitting next to me said she had seen my post and she donated a hundred dollars right away, she was the first one to put money in the jar, so it has been an out pour of love in the community," says Carmona.

The family declined to speak on camera, but they say they've been extremely blessed by the kindnes people have shown.

"It's cool to see people supporting Payton and Annie like this, because if you kow them at all, you know they're the kind of people who are always doing things to help other people, and it's just great to see the community rally around them in this spot in their lives," says Henninger.

"The love in this community is like the 50's, it's like living on sesame street," adds Carmona.

The Dine to Donate will last from 11a.M. To 8 p.M. Monday, January 25, at Guero's Mexican Restaurant in Mt. Vernon, and applies to dine in or carry out.

They will also collect direct donations for the family at any time.

Elon Musk Says He Will Donate $100 Million To Whoever Invents The Best Carbon Capture Technology
GRUENHEIDE, GERMANY - SEPTEMBER 03: Tesla head Elon Musk talks to the press as he arrives to to have a look at the construction site of the new Tesla Gigafactory near Berlin on September 03, 2020 near Gruenheide, Germany. Musk is currently in Germany where he met with vaccine maker CureVac on Tuesday, with which Tesla has a cooperation to build devices for producing RNA vaccines, as well as German Economy Minister Peter Altmaier yesterday.

Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has announced that he is donating $100 million towards a prize for the best technology that can capture carbon dioxide.

Musk, who overtook Amazon founder Jeff Bezos to become the world's richest person this month, made the announcement on Twitter late Thursday, saying he would share more details next week.

"Am donating $100M towards a prize for best carbon capture technology," Musk tweeted to his 42.7 million followers.

Carbon capture is the process of trapping waste carbon dioxide either directly from the air, or just before it gets emitted from factories and power plants.

With the latter, the first step is often to install solvent filters on factory chimneys, which catch the carbon emissions before they're released into the Earth's atmosphere. Once captured, carbon dioxide can then be shipped or piped somewhere it can't escape from (often deep underground) to prevent it contributing to global warming.

Most of the captured carbon dioxide remains underground, but some of it can also used to make plastics and fizzy drinks.

Why is carbon capture needed?
Global carbon dioxide emissions have soared over the last 100 years, leading to unprecedented global warming and climate change.

There are currently around 20 carbon capture, usage and storage (CCUS) projects operating commercially worldwide, according to the International Energy Agency.

The agency said that 30 new projects had been agreed since 2017, but stressed that many more were needed to prevent carbon emissions from raising the temperature on Earth by more than 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.

The IEA believes CCUS projects could reduce carbon emissions by almost a fifth, while also slashing the cost of tackling the climate crisis by 70%. Adapting heavy industry to run on clean energy is relatively difficult and expensive compared to installing carbon capture systems.

U.S. President Joe Biden has pledged to put more of a focus on cutting emissions than his predecessor and said he wants the U.S. To be carbon neutral by 2050.

'Plant more trees'
The prize that Musk has said he will contribute to is connected to the Xprize Foundation, TechCrunch reported, citing an anonymous source. The foundation is a nonprofit that puts on competitions to promote and support innovation.

Aniruddha Sharma, CEO of carbon capture technology developer Carbon Clean, said he's "delighted" to see serial entrepreneur Musk "put both his money and his name behind carbon capture."

He added: "In 2018 the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released findings declaring that carbon capture and storage is essential to mitigating climate change. It's 2021 and the world isn't getting cooler — now is the time to invest in proven solutions. We're not far off a scalable, low-cost solution."

According to the Bloomberg Billionaire Index, Musk has a total net worth of $201 billion, while Bezos has $193 billion. Microsoft founder Bill Gates is the next wealthiest person, with a total net worth of $134 billion.

Musk recently asked his Twitter followers what he should do with his money.

"Critical feedback is always super appreciated, as well as ways to donate money that really make a difference (way harder than it seems)," he tweeted Jan. 8.

Why You Should Call An Austin Car Accident Lawyer After A Crash
Thomas J. Henry Law | Austin American-Statesman
Being in a car accident is the last thing you expect to happen to you. However, if and when it does happen, it’s crucial to contact an Austin car accident lawyer right away. Given below are four reasons why you should get in touch with a personal injury attorney as soon as you can after a car accident.

1. Determining the value of your claim

A car accident can result in tangible or intangible losses. While you might be able to calculate the tangible losses (medical expenses, loss of income, property damage, etc.), you might find it difficult to quantify intangible losses like pain and suffering and diminished quality of life.

An experienced Austin car accident lawyer, on the other hand, can easily calculate the tangible and intangible losses you have suffered and determine how much you can seek in compensation from the at-fault party.

2. Dealing with the insurance company

Following the accident, insurance adjusters might contact you and try to persuade you to settle the case. These are highly trained negotiators who know how to get you to accept their offer – no matter how ridiculously low it might be. This is one of the main reasons why you should contact an Austin car accident lawyer as soon as you can after the accident, as they can deal with the adjusters on your behalf.

Even if the insurance adjustors have no intention of settling the case, they might still contact you in the hope of obtaining some information that can be used to devalue or dismiss your claim. So, it is in your best interest to let your attorney handle all communication with the insurance adjusters.

3. Gathering evidence for your case

Under Texas law, you are required to prove the culpability of the defendant in order to be able to recover damages from them. A wide range of evidence – from medical records to expert testimonies – needs to be produced to prove fault and recover compensation.

The Austin car accident lawyer who represents you will be able to collect the evidence needed for your case by working with medical professionals, accident reconstruction experts, vocational rehabilitation experts, and by interviewing people who witnessed the accident.

4. Recovering compensation for your injuries

As a Texas resident, you have two options to recover damages for your injuries and other losses:

Negotiating a settlement with the insurance company
Filing a lawsuit in civil court
In either of these scenarios, you need a skilled car accident lawyer by your side in order to be able to obtain the compensation you deserve.

Choose the best Austin car accident lawyer to represent you

If you are looking for a skilled and trustworthy attorney to represent you in a car accident case, consider Thomas J. Henry. As the founder of the largest and one of the most successful personal injury law firms in Texas, Mr. Henry has an impressive track record that few others in his profession can match.

To find out how we can help you with your car accident claim, call our firm today at (866) 517-5659 or contact us using this form and schedule a free consultation with one of our attorneys.

Trump’s Impeachment Lawyer Saved Philandering Sanford

Nikki Haley's attorney Butch Bowers addresses the S.C. House Ethics committee during day one, Thursday, June 28, 2012, of their investigation into Haley at the Solomon Blatt Building in Columbia, South Carolina.
(Bloomberg) -- Donald Trump will be represented at his impeachment trial by South Carolina lawyer Butch Bowers, who’s best known for helping save a former governor -- and eventual Trump foe -- from being removed from office following a scandal over an extramarital affair.

Trump adviser Jason Miller confirmed the hiring in a statement posted to Twitter on Thursday. The former president, who left office Wednesday after one term, will go on trial soon in the U.S. Senate after being impeached in the House for inciting an insurrection at the Capitol on Jan. 6 that led to five deaths.

Bowers, who has worked on high-profile voting and election matters, represented former South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford in 2009 when the Republican-led legislature weighed impeachment after he admitted lying to aides about hiking the Appalachian Trail when he was really in Argentina with his mistress.

Bowers didn’t return a phone call or email seeking comment.

Senator Lindsey Graham, a South Carolina Republican and vocal supporter of the former president, said he knows Bowers and called him a “solid guy” who would be the “anchor tenant” of Trump’s legal team.

The former president “looks forward to getting this behind him,” Graham said. Trump “believes this is unconstitutional and damages the presidency, but you know he’s going to have his day in court and that’s the way the system works.”

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said Friday that the House’s article of impeachment will be delivered to the Senate on Monday, triggering the process leading to a trial. Minority Leader Mitch McConnell on Thursday told fellow Republicans that he favors delaying the start of the trial until February to give the former president time to mount a defense. Trump has said he doesn’t believe he’s guilty of inciting the mob with his fiery speech before the riot because he didn’t call for violence.

Trump is building his impeachment defense team as law firms continue to part ways with him following his challenge to the election result and the raid on the Capitol by his supporters. Seyfarth Shaw LLP and Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP became the latest firms in a growing list to say they’re cutting ties with the former president and his companies. Seyfarth cited the former president’s role in stoking the Jan. 6 riot, while Morgan Lewis declined to offer a reason. A tax lawyer at Morgan Lewis is currently embroiled in a probe of Trump’s family business by New York’s attorney general.

Bowers, of Columbia, South Carolina, is known for defending North Carolina’s controversial voter-identification legislation as well as the state’s so-called bathroom bill in a lawsuit with the Obama administration. While the bill became law, the portion that targeted transgender residents was repealed after a boycott of the state by businesses and sporting events. Bowers also served as Special Counsel for Voting Matters at the U.S. Justice Department during President George W. Bush’s administration, and he was the chairman of the South Carolina State Election Commission from 2004 to 2007.

Sanford Defense
Bowers represented Sanford before a South Carolina House impeachment committee. Sanford had rejected a call from the state’s House speaker to resign amid a probe into his expenditures after his affair with a woman in Argentina was revealed. When the committee voted not to proceed with impeachment, Sanford finished his second term as governor.

Sanford then served in Congress, but narrowly lost a 2018 re-election primary after Trump endorsed his opponent and tweeted on election day that the lawmaker was “nothing but trouble.” Sanford went on to run a brief and unsuccessful primary campaign against Trump in 2019.

Trump was represented by former White House counsel Pat Cipollone and Jay Sekulow in his first impeachment trial, which stemmed from the president’s attempt to get the president of Ukraine to open a criminal investigation into Joe Biden’s son Hunter. Trump’s pressure tactic failed, and the call led to his first impeachment. Biden was elected president and was sworn in Wednesday.

(Updates with details on Trump’s problems keeping lawyers. An earlier version corrected the name of Butch Bowers in a deck headline.)

QAnon Shaman's Lawyer Blames Trump For 'Duping' Client Into 'Decisions He Should Not Have Made'

Jacob Anthony Chansley, the "QAnon Shaman" also known as Jake Angeli, was arrested on January 9 for his participation in the deadly riot.
An attorney for Jacob Anthony Chansley, the "QAnon Shaman" also known as Jake Angeli, is putting the blame on former President Donald Trump for his client's involvement in the deadly storming of the U.S. Capitol on January 6.

"He regrets very, very much having not just been duped by the president but by being in a position where he allowed that duping to put him in a position to make decisions he should not have made," Albert Watkins, a lawyer for Chansley, told Missouri's NBC-affiliated television station KSDK.

Chansley has become one of the most recognizable faces of the riot, largely because of his appearance. The 33-year-old Arizona native went viral after being photographed bare-chested and wearing a fur hat with horns while carrying an American flag. He's worn similar attire at pro-Trump rallies in Arizona while carrying a sign saying "Q sent me"—referring to the conspiracy theory that promotes the idea that Trump is a savior in a fight against child-sex predators that includes prominent Democrats and "deep state" government officials.

U.S. Capitol Hill Riots In Pictures

He was arrested on January 9 and charged with knowingly entering or remaining in any restricted building or grounds without lawful authority, and with violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds. He now faces additional charges of civil disorder, obstruction of an official proceeding, disorderly conduct in a restricted building and demonstrating in a Capitol building.

Watkins has maintained that Trump bears responsibility for what took place on January 6 and that his client didn't participate in the violence and surrendered peacefully.

"Let's roll the tape. Let's roll the months of lies and misrepresentations and horrific innuendo and hyperbolic speech by our president designed to inflame, enrage, motivate," Watkins told KSDK. "What's really curious is the reality that our president, as a matter of public record, invited these individuals, as president, to walk down to the Capitol with him."

The attorney had pushed for a presidential pardon for his client, but none of the people arrested following the Capitol insurrection were granted clemency by Trump before he left office on January 20.

Thousands of Trump supporters gathered in Washington on January 6 to protest the certification of President Joe Biden's victory. The demonstration coincided with a joint session of Congress to affirm the Electoral College votes. Trump addressed his supporters at a "Stop the Steal" rally, where he continued to make baseless accusations that the presidential election was riddled with fraud and told the crowd members that they would have to "fight much harder."

Chansley previously told NBC News that he still thought of the January 6 attack as a victory, even though Congress certified Biden's win.

"The fact that we had a bunch of our traitors in office hunker down, put on their gas masks and retreat into their underground bunker, I consider that a win," he said.

Federal prosecutors continue to charge participants in the Capitol riot. So far, more than 100 people have been arrested. The latest wave of arrests included Joseph Randall Biggs, a Florida-based member of the right-wing Proud Boys group.

Chansley called the FBI himself to confirm his appearance at the riot. He told investigators that he came "as a part of a group effort, with other 'patriots' from Arizona, at the request of the president that all 'patriots' come to D.C. On January 6, 2021," according to a Justice Department release.

Newsweek reached out to Watkins for additional comment but didn't receive a response in time for publication.

Biden halts oil and gas leases, permits on US land and water
BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — The Biden administration announced Thursday a 60-day suspension of new oil and gas leasing and drilling permits for U.S. lands and waters, as officials moved quickly to reverse Trump administration policies on energy and the environment.

The suspension, part of a broad review of programs at the Department of Interior, went into effect immediately under an order signed Wednesday by Acting Interior Secretary Scott de la Vega. It follows Democratic President Joe Biden’s campaign pledge to halt new drilling on federal lands and end the leasing of publicly owned energy reserves as part of his plan to address climate change.

The order did not ban new drilling outright. It includes an exception giving a small number of senior Interior officials — the secretary, deputy secretary, solicitor and several assistant secretaries — authority to approve actions that otherwise would be suspended.

The order also applies to coal leases and permits, and blocks the approval of new mining plans. Land sales and exchanges and the hiring of senior-level staff at the agency also were suspended.

Under former President Donald Trump, federal agencies prioritized energy development and eased environmental rules to speed up drilling permits as part of the Republican's goal to boost fossil fuel production. Trump consistently downplayed the dangers of climate change, which Biden has made a top priority.

On his first day in office Wednesday, Biden signed a series of executive orders that underscored his different approach — rejoining the Paris Climate Accord, revoking approval of the Keystone XL oil pipeline from Canada and telling agencies to immediately review dozens of Trump-era rules on science, the environment and public health.

The Interior Department order did not limit existing oil and gas operations under valid leases, meaning activity won't come to a sudden halt on the millions of acres of lands in the West and offshore in the Gulf of Mexico where much drilling is concentrated. Its effect could be further blunted by companies that stockpiled enough drilling permits in Trump's final months to allow them to keep pumping oil and gas for years.

Erik Milito with the National Ocean Industries Association, which represents offshore energy firms, said he was optimistic companies still will be able to get new permits approved through the senior-level officials specified in the order.

But Biden’s move could be the first step in an eventual goal to ban all leases and permits to drill on federal land. Mineral leasing laws state that federal lands are for many uses, including extracting oil and gas, but the Democrat could set out to rewrite those laws, said Kevin Book, managing director at Clearview Energy Partners.

The administration's announcement drew outrage from Republicans and some industry trade groups. They said limiting access to publicly owned energy resources would mean more foreign oil imports, lost jobs and fewer tax revenues.

Republican Sen. John Barrasso of Wyoming said the administration was “off to a divisive and disastrous start." He added that the government is legally obliged to act on all drilling permit applications it receives and that “staff memos” can't override the law.

“Impeding American energy will only serve to hurt local communities and hamper America’s economic recovery,” American Petroleum Institute President Mike Sommers said in a statement.

National Wildlife Federation Vice President Tracy Stone-Manning said she expected Biden to make good on his campaign promise to end leasing altogether, or at least impose a long-term moratorium on any new issuances.

“The Biden administration has made a commitment to driving down carbon emissions. It makes sense starting with the land that we all own,” she said. “We have 24 million acres already under lease. That should get us through."

Oil and gas extracted from public lands and waters account for about a quarter of annual U.S. production. Extracting and burning those fuels generates the equivalent of almost 550 million tons (500 metric tons) of greenhouse gases annually, the U.S. Geological Survey said in a 2018 study.

Under Trump, Interior officials approved almost 1,400 permits on federal lands, primarily in Wyoming and New Mexico, over a three-month period that included the election, according to an Associated Press analysis of government data. Those permits, which remain valid, will allow companies to continue drilling for years, potentially undercutting Biden’s climate agenda.

But there are other ways an ambitious Biden administration could make it harder for permit holders to extract oil and gas. “The ability to get your resources out, to get right of way, to get roads, to get supporting infrastructure, not all of that is signed and sealed right now,” Clearview Energy's Book said.

Under President Barack Obama, the Interior Department imposed a 2016 moratorium on federal coal leases while it investigated the coal program's climate effects and whether companies were paying a fair share for coal from public lands. Trump lifted the moratorium soon after taking office.

Biden halts oil and gas leases on U.S. land, water for 60 days
BILLINGS, Mont. — The Biden administration announced Thursday the suspension of new oil and gas leasing and drilling permits for U.S. lands and waters for 60 days as part a broad review of programs at the Department of Interior.

The move follows President Joe Biden’s campaign pledge to halt new drilling on federal lands and end the leasing of publicly owned energy reserves as part of his plan to address climate change.

The suspension went into effect immediately under an order signed Wednesday by Acting Interior Secretary Scott de la Vega. The order did not limit existing oil and gas operations under valid leases, meaning oil and gas activity won’t come to a sudden halt on the millions of acres of lands in the West and offshore in the Gulf of Mexico where much drilling is concentrated.

The order also blocks the approval of new mining plans, land sales or exchanges and the hiring of senior-level staff at the agency.

The administration’s announcement drew a quick backlash from the oil industry’s main trade group, the American Petroleum Institute, which said limiting access to publicly owned energy resources would mean more foreign oil imports, lost jobs and fewer tax revenues.

“Impeding American energy will only serve to hurt local communities and hamper America’s economic recovery,” petroleum institute President Mike Sommers said in a statement.

National Wildlife Federation Vice President Tracy Stone-Manning welcomed the move and said she expected Biden to make good on his campaign promises and end leasing altogether or at the least impose a long-term moratorium on any new issuances.

“The Biden administration has made a commitment to driving down carbon emissions. It makes sense starting with the land that we all own,” she said.

But the impact could be blunted by companies that stockpiled drilling permits in the closing months of the Trump administration.

Officials approved almost 1,400 permits on federal lands, primarily in Wyoming and New Mexico, over a three-month period that included the election. Those permits, which remain valid, will allow companies to continue drilling for years, potentially undercutting Biden’s climate agenda.

Oil and gas extracted from public lands and waters account for about a quarter of annual U.S. production. Extracting and burning those fuels generates the equivalent of almost 550 million tons (500 metric tons) of greenhouse gases annually, the U.S. Geological Survey said in a 2018 study.

Why Natural Gas Producers Are Betting Big On Hydrogen
With president-elect Joe Biden having vowed to return the United States to the 2015 Paris Climate Accord as a matter of urgency, the clean energy sector is about to gain a big ally in Washington.

But not so much the fossil fuel sector, by far the biggest contributor to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In fact, the EIA released a damning report that in 2018, carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from burning fossil fuels were equal to ~75% of total U.S. anthropogenic GHG emissions and ~93% of total U.S. anthropogenic CO2 emissions (based on 100-year global warming potential).

But make no mistake about it, the sector has no plans to go out with a whimper and has for years been packaging natural gas as a suitable and credible fuel bridge that will remain dominant for decades as dirtier fossil fuels gradually make way for renewable energy.

Unfortunately, whereas that narrative might have been valid a few years ago, it is increasingly becoming a hard sell as solar and wind costs continue to fall at an unprecedented clip.

Although cleaner than coal and oil, natural gas is still orders of magnitude dirtier than the dirtiest renewable energy sources when accounting for lifecycle emissions.

The natural gas industry fully understands this and is now courting yet another renewable ally: Hydrogen.

False narrative

Hydrogen as a fuel source has been on the market for decades. Still, it has never really been able to break the glass ceiling of mass-market appeal, mainly due to a host of technical and cost issues.

Indeed, battery power has mostly been winning the race to replace the internal combustion engine (ICE) more than any other alternative fuel type. EV companies like Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) have already hit the fast lane while hydrogen-powered fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) appear to have stalled on the start line.

A case in point is California, one of the greenest states in the United States. The golden state boasts a grand total of 20,992 EV charging stations compared to just 40 public hydrogen fueling stations.

But now, Wall Street believes that the hydrogen fuel economy has finally reached a tipping point, and hydrogen could soon develop into a globally-traded energy source, just like oil and gas. Related: Biden Plans To Kill Keystone XL Oil Pipeline

London–based global information provider IHS Markit has reported that a growing number of oil, automotive, and other companies have been proactively investing in hydrogen technologies.

The analyst says that countries across the globe are investing in hydrogen either as a tool to meet ambitious decarbonization goals or an opportunity for export.

For instance, hydrocarbon exporting countries in the Middle East well endowed with high solar insolation; coal-rich countries like Australia, gas-rich countries like Russia as well as highly industrialized energy-importing countries in Asia and Europe are all showing a keen interest in hydrogen.

More importantly, zero-carbon hydrogen has recently been injected into a UK gas network for the first time in a groundbreaking trial that could help to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. The 20% hydrogen and natural gas blend is being used to heat 100 homes and 30 faculty buildings at Keele University in Staffordshire. If successful, the project could be expanded to cover wider parts of the country and possibly be adopted by other countries.

Natural gas remains the most dominant fuel source in the U.S. electricity generation mix, but maybe not for much longer.

Cheap renewables

Renewable energy has lately become more affordable, accessible, and more prevalent than ever before thanks to technology improvements, competitive procurement and a large base of experienced, internationally active project developers.

In fact, according to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), solar and wind power generation are now fully competitive with fossil fuel power plants, with the global weighted average levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) for utility-scale solar PV cells having declined 75% to below USD 0.10/kWh since 2010. Related: Canada Is Cleaning Up Its Oil Sands

But solar costs are still declining.

At an LCOE of $0.085/kWh for photovoltaic cells and $0.185/kWh for concentrating solar projects, solar power(utility-scale + residential rooftop) remains more expensive than other renewable sources, including hydro, onshore wind, geothermal, and bioenergy. However, this IEA prediction says solar power is about to become one of the cheapest, if not the cheapest, ways to generate electricity by 2025.

The capacity-weighted average is the average levelized cost per technology, weighted by the new capacity coming online in each region. The capacity additions for each region are based on additions from 2023 to 2025. Technologies for which capacity additions are not expected do not have a capacity-weighted average and are marked as NB, or not built.

Favorable hydrogen economics

On the other hand, cheap green hydrogen could quickly make natural gas irrelevant.

Green hydrogen is hydrogen produced by the electrolysis of water using 100% renewable energy, thus making it a zero-carbon source.

Unfortunately, less than one percent of the world's hydrogen production is of the green type, with the vast majority being derived from natural gas reforming. Indeed, 95% of the hydrogen produced in the United States is currently made by natural gas reforming i.e., gray hydrogen.

The big problem here is that producing large amounts of green hydrogen requires massive amounts of renewable energy; For instance, the UK government's independent Climate Change Committee estimates that the country would need 30x its current offshore wind capacity in order to produce enough green hydrogen to replace all gas boilers in the UK.

But that might be about to change.

Last year, the world's green hydrogen leaders joined hands with an ambitious goal to drive a 50-fold scale-up in green hydrogen production over the next six years that could lead to a major fall in green hydrogen prices.

The Green Hydrogen Catapult Initiative is a brainchild of founding partners Saudi clean energy group ACWA Power, Australian project developer CWP Renewables, European energy giants Iberdrola and Ørsted, Chinese wind turbine manufacturer Envision, Italian gas group Snam, and Yara, a Norwegian fertilizer producer.

The companies hope to drive 25GW of green hydrogen production by 2026, a scale that could significantly drive down hydrogen costs to below $2/kg thus making the fuel source competitive with fossil fuels in power generation. The companies hope to drive 25GW of green hydrogen production by 2026, a scale that could significantly drive down hydrogen costs to below $2/kg thus making the fuel source competitive with fossil fuels in power generation.

If successful, natural gas' days as the most dominant fuel source in the U.S. electricity generation mix could be numbered.

Read feedback from real users to get an overview of a potential platform.

What Are the Advantages of Christian Dating Sites?

You’re likely going to get a Christian match, hence, someone who shares the same faith as you.
If you’re a staunch Christian, who believes in purity before marriage, you could find a compatible partner hassle-free.
