I recently resigned from my job after seventeen years with the same agency. I decided that I was going to try to build my own home based business. During the seventeen years that I was working for the agency I was diagnosed with arthritis. This form of arthritis depleted the immune system, so it seemed that I was always coming down with what ever virus was going around. I also had frequent headaches, which were also contributed to the arthritis. I was on several different pain medications as well as anti inflammatory drugs. After I resigned my symptoms went away. At first I thought this was because of the decreased stress in my life, but now I realize that the agency that I worked for has sick building syndrome.

During my years at work the agency had completed two major remodeling projects as well as an addition. Several of the other workers claimed that the building was making them sick; however I thought they were just chronic complainers. Now that my health has been restored I realize that there really is such a thing as sick building syndrome. I have done some investigating into this subject and have found that the symptoms are common and that the problem is wide spread.

The symptoms of sick building syndrome vary from person to person and some people are affected more than others. The symptoms are similar to many common complaints so often times the environment that the person works in is over looked. Sick building syndrome is caused by a variety of things. The most common is the forming of mold and mildew in the ceiling panels and partitions of the walls. The mold and mildew form when an area is sealed prior to paint and other chemical applications drying. The mold and mildew spores are released when the air conditioning or heat circulate through the areas. Because ceiling tiles and partition walls are porous the spores pass through and are breathed in by occupants of the office space. Most buildings are sealed tightly to increase the efficiency of the heating and cooling systems, however the seal also prevents harmful off gassing to exit the buildings which contribute to the sick building syndrome. Buildings that are newly built and those that are located in high humidity areas are the most likely to experience problems. Buildings that are built in areas of extreme temperature fluctuation also have many of the sick building syndrome symptoms.

The effects of sick building syndrome can be reduced through proper ventilation and also air purification systems. Companies often times do not want to spend the additional money on these things, however they would save money on insurance costs as well as sick time taken by employees.
