Having the right martial art equipment is an important part of your training regimen. I should know. When I first began training, I had no martial arts gear at all. I used to do a lot of drills without martial arts sparring equipment – even full on fighting as part of my training! This was alright for a while, and it seemed like I could get on fine without any martial art equipment at all. I had some loose sweats, and my tennis shoes, and I was ready to go. Sure, I would get knocked about the face from time to time, because I had no gloves or other martial art equipment, but a bruise here and there did not seem to be such a big deal to me. I was fine with it.

Then, one day, I really got hurt. I was knocked out by a roundhouse kick to the face. I thought that I was alright and could just shake it off, but it turns out that I had a bad concussion. To top it off, I broke my arm in the fall. I was laid up for several weeks from my injuries, and let me tell you, that was no fun at all. If I had been practicing, using proper martial art equipment, I really doubt if I would have been hurt at all. Sure, it is possible to be hurt, even with all of the martial arts training and martial arts equipment in the world, but it sure is a lot less likely than without it. Remember, your health is the most important thing that you have. You should never put it at risk just because you want to save a buck or two. That kind of risk-taking behavior is just simply idiotic, if you ask me.

Of course, martial art equipment is not just safety gear. Many of the traditional costumes used in the fighting arts are absolutely essential to show your rank and ability. In addition to this, there are many martial arts that use weapons as part of their training. Without either using these weapons, or well made practice weapons, you can not practically train in the use of these martial arts. Really, like in any other discipline, you need the right weapons. The better your martial art equipment is, the more effective your training and competition is. It is important to have good gear!
